Some of my best childhood memories happened in Rake, Iowa. I remember when Grandpa would let me drive the tractor. How cool is that?!! Later in the summer, he'd point out a crooked row and say, "Who did that? Was that you or Scott?" Of course, it had to be Uncle Scott!
Grandpa and Grandma taught Scott and I how to play the piano. Ask me to play "Doctor, Doctor." I also learned how to golf at their house. Grandpa would tell us to aim and hit the barn. Unfortunately, he underestimated the "Bauer Power." I'm sure well over 50 balls flew over the barn and landed into the field. Oops!
But what I remember the most was the end of every visit. Every time we gave hugs and said good-bye, he would shake our hand and say, "See you in the movies!" I always thought that was a funny way to say good-bye. Now that I think about it, that was a great way to end our visit because I left with a smile - most of the time.
A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to see him one last time in the nursing home. It was a very short but meaningful visit. No, I didn't get a chance to verbally say my final "thank yous" and "good-bye" but I did walk away feeling at peace with everything. I know he understood my intentions and the meaning of the visit.
Until the next time, Grandpa, "I'll see you in the movies!"

see you in the movies ... how cute. I am so sorry to hear about your Grandpa. That is tough. He sounds like quite a wonderful man.
Thank you, Lexi!
Mike - thank you for sharing this tribute to your grandpa - I feel like I know him a little bit now. Someday when you are a grandpa, perhaps you'll want to use his special 'goodbye' with your grandkids!
So sorry for your loss,
Barb78
ps - don't know where that "78" after my name came from... I didn't type it?!
I still remember when we would drive the riding lawnmower around the trees and house. He would always have Werthers Original and Butterscotch candies lying around. He taught me the poem/song "I Went To The River and I Couldn't Get Across" and "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window". He taught me how to whistle. He let us drive the truck on the gravel roads when we shouldn't have. We watched Laurel and Hardy movies. He would cut my Eggo waffles in the morning after spending the night, which didn't happen very often. So many memories that I will hold close to me. Thank you for everything. You will be missed and remembered Grandpa, 'Ivan', 'Wayne', 'Allen', 'Allan'.
